About

Eggert Gudmundsson

Over three decades I've worked across RF and microwave design, electro-optics and laser systems, radar and lidar instrumentation, FPGA-based data acquisition, and industrial monitoring and controls — most of it in the demanding, remote setting of an Arctic research facility.

About twenty of those years were spent at a research site in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, first for the Danish Meteorological Institute and later for SRI International under NSF. It was difficult, interesting work done alongside a small crew and some very good people, and I learned a lot from it — radar and lidar systems, high-speed DAQ and signal processing, and whatever else it took to keep a one-of-a-kind facility running in the Arctic.

When the facility closed in 2018, I spent a few months helping relocate scientific instrumentation for DTU Space before moving back to Iceland to work at Vista Engineering, where I'm still today, mostly doing systems engineering and industrial monitoring work.

Lately I've been going back to hands-on device development — working through Nordic Semiconductor's cellular IoT training on the nRF91 platform — as groundwork for a project idea of my own around remote environmental sensing. Early days, work in progress.

Experience

Chief Technology Officer 2018 – present
Vista Engineering · Reykjavík, Iceland

Systems engineering and industrial monitoring work, day to day — design, field troubleshooting, installations and commissioning, and helping keep projects moving from idea to something running.

  • Systems engineering
  • Industrial monitoring
  • Field troubleshooting
  • Installation & commissioning
  • Staff training
CEO, self-employed 2018
CSC Greenland · Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

A short-lived company that was mostly a container for relocating DTU Space instrumentation — a magnetometer system and a Callisto radiospectrometer with antennas — after the Sondrestrom facility closed. Wound it down once the job was done and moved back to Iceland.

  • Instrumentation relocation
  • Magnetometer systems
  • Radiospectrometer & antennas
  • Municipal & vendor coordination
  • Aviation radio
Principal Research Engineer, Site Supervisor 2009 – 2018
SRI International · Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Supervised site operations at the Sondrestrom Research Facility (Kellyville). RF and microwave design, radar signal-processing front ends on Xilinx FPGAs, and keeping a one-of-a-kind research site running — including its power plant and a 32-metre parabolic dish drive.

  • RF & microwave design
  • FPGA / mixed-signal (Verilog, System Generator, KC705)
  • Radar signal processing
  • Matlab DSP

  • System augmentation
  • Crew scheduling
  • Visiting-scientist support
Engineer 1997 – 2002
Danish Meteorological Institute, Research Department · Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

First job out of college. Maintained a Brewer ozone spectrometer, flux-gate magnetometers, and riometers, and was on-site engineer for ARCLITE, a high-power lidar system — data acquisition software, GPIB photon-counter interfaces, stepper-motor optics control, and a multi-wavelength upgrade with a sodium dye laser. A lot of optical design and alignment work along the way.

  • Electro-optics
  • Lidar systems (ARCLITE)
  • LabVIEW CVI & Delphi
  • GPIB instrumentation
  • Stepper-motor optics control
  • Dye laser wavelength control
  • Optical design & alignment
  • Magnetometers & riometers
